You see things; and you say "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say "Why not?" -George Bernard Shaw
A smart mind, opposable thumb and flexible arms, and an upright position made us different from other animals. Human ingenuity has, since the beginning, compensated for our deficiencies, and been responsible for all our progress. In fact, the word 'Engineer' comes from Latin root ingeniosus, meaning skilled. An engineer is a clever problem solver. Engineering applies scientific and technical knowledge to solve human problems. Engineers use imagination, judgment, reasoning and experience to apply science, technology, mathematics, and practical experience. The result is the design, production, and operation of useful objects or processes. While science tells us how, Engineering must proceed to answer 'how': the crucial and unique task of the engineer is to identify, understand, and integrate the constraints on a design in order to produce a successful result. By understanding the constraints, engineers deduce specifications for the limits within which a viable object or system may be produced and operated. In trying to arrive at practicable solutions, an Engineer has to use his knowledge of science, mathematics, apply present technology, and use appropriate experience. Computers have enabled sophisticated modeling on a software without doing time-and-resource-consuming scale models.
Technology derives from the Greek root techne, meaning 'craft'. It is an encompassing term dealing with the use and knowledge of humanity's tools and crafts. It can mean one of three things: the tools available for work; the science behind the tools and the technique; a phenomenon that defines society and culture. Like Engineering, Technology tries to arrive at practicable solutions to problems. Human craftsmanship has been used since the beginning - from the control over fire to taming water; from developing household articles to complex machinery. Technology is an amalgamating process whereby it adds knowledge and craftsmanship from every avenue to make human life better, without going into deeper philosophical questions as a scientist would do. Every article that we see and use is a gift of Engineering and Technology, whether it is mineral water packaged in a plastic bottle, or the laptop we write on.
